For decades, Mina's country has been devastated by deadly storms. Entire communities are destroyed by floods, and the limited resources that remain are the subject of violent conflicts. Her people think that the Sea God, who used to be their defender, has now cursed them with demise and hopelessness. Every year, a lovely girl is cast into the water to be the Sea God's wife in an effort to placate him. The idea is that one day the "true bride" would be selected, bringing an end to the misery.
Many think that Shim Cheong, the most attractive girl in the community and Joon's elder brother's favorite, may be the fabled true wife. But on the night Cheong is to be sacrificed, Joon follows Cheong out to sea, even knowing that to interfere is a death sentence. In place of Cheong, Mina jumps into the river to rescue her brother.
Swept away to the Spirit Realm, a magical city of lesser gods and mythical beasts, Mina seeks out the Sea God, only to find him caught in an enchanted sleep. Mina sets out to wake the Sea God and permanently put a stop to the murderous storms with the aid of an enigmatic young man called Shin and a motley company of demons, gods, and spirits.
She doesn't have much time, however, since humans don't last very long in the realm of the dead. There are also others who would stop at nothing to prevent the Sea God from awakening.
