Not only was Ruby McTavish Callahan Woodward Miller Kenmore the richest woman in North Carolina at the time of her death, but she was also the most infamous. Ruby, who was four times widowed and the victim of a well-known kidnapping as a young girl, dominated the little town of Tavistock from Ashby House, her family's estate nestled high in the Blue Ridge mountains. Following her passing, her adoptive son Camden inherits that estate in addition to a nine-figure inheritance and the intricate McTavish legacy.

To everyone's amazement, though, Cam doesn't really want anything to do with the house, money, or the remaining McTavishes. Rather than accepting his inheritance, he decides to live a regular life in Colorado as an English teacher and marries Jules, a lady who is equally ready to leave her own troubled past behind.

After ten years, Camden is just a McTavish in name, but he and Jules are reunited at Ashby House after receiving a summons following the passing of his uncle. Cam is reminded of why he left so quickly even if the house's rooms and vistas are still as exquisite as they were when he first visited.

Jules, on the other hand, is adamant that her husband get what Ruby originally meant for him to have, and her determination to do so grows as she discovers more about Cam's estranged family and the dark secrets they conceal.

However, Ruby's schemes were never as simple as they seemed. Questions concerning the notorious heiress surface as Ashby House tries harder to hold Jules and Camden captive. Did the rumors that had been going around since she went missing as a little child have any merit? What actually happened to those four husbands, who all passed away inexplicably? And why, initially, did she choose to adopt Cam? Before long, Jules and Cam come to understand that ties to family extend well beyond death and that an inheritance might encompass much more than what is stated in a will.
