I leave you, observant reader, with my past. While perusing her father's library late one evening, a young lady discovers an antiquated book and a stack of yellowing letters. All of the letters are addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor," and they drag her into a world she never would have imagined—a maze where the unfathomable evil concealed deep in history is connected to the mysteries of her mother's enigmatic destiny and her father's past.

The letters connect us to one of the most evil forces humankind has ever faced, as well as a centuries-long search to eradicate this darkness. It is an investigation into the real history of Vlad the Impaler, the mediaeval tyrant whose savage reign served as the inspiration for the Dracula legend. at order to discover the truth about Vlad the Impaler and Dracula, generations of historians have placed their reputations, sanities, and even lives at danger. A young lady must now choose whether to go on her father's quest, which almost led him to ruin years ago when he was a bright young scholar and her mother was still living. What relevance does Vlad the Impaler's mythology have to contemporary society? Could it be that the legendary Dracula was a real person and that he has continued to exist for centuries, seeking his own unknown goals? The answers to these questions travel across time and space as the father and daughter look for hints in places as diverse as dusty Ivy League libraries, deep Eastern Europe, and Istanbul. Through a series of cities, monasteries, archives, letters, and private discussions, the terrible truth of Vlad the Impaler's gloomy rule and a time-bending agreement that could have preserved his terrible work through the years comes to light.
