A mystical isle. A risky undertaking. An ardent mystery.

Linus Baker lives a secluded and peaceful existence. He is forty years old and has a cunning cat and ancient albums in a modest home. He works as a Case Worker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth, where he is responsible for the welfare of children in orphanages that are approved by the government.

The strange and highly secret mission that Linus receives when he is abruptly called upon by Extremely Upper Management is to visit the Marsyas Island Orphanage, home to six hazardous children: the Antichrist, a were-Pomeranian, a gnome, a sprite, a wyvern, and an unidentified green blob. Linus has to put aside his worries and assess the likelihood that they will signal the end of times.

However, the island conceals more secrets than only its young ones. The endearing and mysterious Arthur Parnassus is their guardian, and he will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of his charges. Long-kept truths are revealed as Arthur and Linus become closer, and Linus is forced to decide whether to demolish a house or watch the world burn.

The House in the Cerulean Sea is a beautifully spoken tale about the deep feeling of finding an improbable family in an unexpected location and realising that family is your own.
