When Nazi tanks storm into Emma Bau's home Poland, she has only been married for three weeks at the age of nineteen. After a few days, Emma's husband Jacob is compelled to go underground, imprisoning her in the run-down, moldering Jewish ghetto of the city. But suddenly the resistance smuggles her out in the middle of night. After being sent to live with Jacob's Catholic aunt Krysia in Krakow, Emma assumes the identity of a gentile named Anna Lipowski. Emma is introduced to Kommandant Richwalder, a high-ranking Nazi officer who employs her as his secretary, further complicating her already difficult position. Emma is compelled by the resistance to violate her marriage vows and put her life at risk in order to further Jacob's goals by using her position to get information about the Nazi occupation. Emma's connection with the Kommandant becomes more intense as the horrors of war increase, leading to a dramatic conclusion that might jeopardize not only her double existence but also the lives of people she holds dear.
