Murderer Edward Fosca is. Mariana is assured of this. Fosca, however, is untouchable. Fosca is a charming and attractive Greek Tragedy professor at Cambridge University who is loved by both faculty and students, especially by the members of The Maidens, a covert organisation of female students.

Group therapist Mariana Andros is intelligent but unstable; when one of the group's members, Zoe's acquaintance, is discovered dead in Cambridge, Mariana gets obsessed with The Maidens.

Mariana, who attended the institution once herself, has a sneaking suspicion that there is something evil hidden behind the historic customs and behind the picturesque grandeur of the spires and turrets. And she starts to believe that Edward Fosca is the murderer even if he has an alibi. However, why would the instructor pick on one of his pupils? And why does he constantly coming back to the rituals around the virgin Persephone and her descent into the underworld?

Mariana's preoccupation with establishing Fosca's guilt escalates out of hand when another corpse is discovered, endangering both her reputation and her closest connections. But Mariana will stop at nothing, even if it means sacrificing her own life, to stop this murderer.
