1943, Auschwitz: My fingertips followed the black tattoo engraved over the young baby's leg as I held her in my arms. And I hoped that one day, this combination of numbers—which matched her mother's—would be able to bring a family that has been split apart by conflict back together.

This moving tale, which was inspired by a remarkable actual event, chronicles one woman's struggle for love, life, and hope during an unfathomably dark period.

Ana Kaminski is forced beside her terrified little companion Ester Pasternak as they enter Auschwitz via the iron gates. When they get to the head of the line, Ana moves up front and discreetly introduces herself as a midwife, with Ester acting as her helper. They are told to report to the maternity hut and get tattoos on their arms. As she holds a helpless newborn, Ana realizes that so many people depend on her for their future and makes a commitment to do everything it takes to keep them safe.

Ana finds it almost unbearable when two SS uniform-clad soldiers enter and take a blonde infant away from its mother. As Ana comforts the upset lady, she discovers that there is a ray of hope even in the middle of the horrific heartbreak. In order to ensure their survival, the guards are adopting the healthiest infants and putting them with German families. There are also rumors that the conflict is almost over. In the hopes that they might one day be reunited, Ana and Ester start covertly tattooing little children with their mother's phone numbers.

Then, early in the morning, Ana spots the little lump under Ester's skimpy striped outfit.
