Coralie Sardie is the daughter of the dark magician who creates the popular freak show The Museum of Extraordinary Things on the beachfront in Coney Island. Proficient in swimming, Coralie may be seen as the Mermaid at her father's "museum," where she can also see acts like the Butterfly Girl, the Wolfman, and a turtle that is 100 years old. Coralie comes onto a handsome young guy one night who is in the woods near the Hudson River, photographing trees lighted by the moon. Eddie Cohen, the handsome photographer, is a Russian immigrant who fled his work as an apprentice tailor and the strict Lower East Side neighborhood where his father was employed. Eddie captures the destruction left by the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire on New York's streets, which piques Coralie's interest and draws him into the strange mystery surrounding the disappearance of a young lady.
