Freedom and everything that it entails are, after all, the only things that are really worth fighting for. Maybe some poetry and a nice glass of wine. delicious supper. Mother Nature. If you're fortunate, love.

After the Second World War, Robert Appleyard leaves his Durham village and walks there one summer. He travels across the northern countryside at the age of sixteen, the son of a coal miner, until he arrives to Robin Hood's Bay, a former smuggling settlement. There, he meets Dulcie, an elderly, eccentric, and cosmopolitan lady who lives in a dilapidated cottage with a view of the ocean.

Robert's life becomes abundant with food, sea swimming, sunburns, and poetry while he stays with Dulcie. Despite coming from opposite backgrounds, the two develop a strange bond throughout the summer that will have a significant impact on their destinies.

A remarkable new book about an odd connection between a young man and an elderly lady is written by the Walter Scott Prize-winning author of The Gallows Pole. It is set in the former smuggling hamlet of Robin Hood's Bay in the years after World War II.
