Neeve said, "On St. Mark's Eve, there are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit." "You either killed him or you're his true love."

Even before the corpses show up, the graveyard is chilly.

Each year, Blue Sargent watches the soon-to-be dead pass by while standing next to her mother, a clairvoyant. It isn't until this year that Blue herself sees them; a boy appears out of the darkness and addresses her directly.

Blue quickly learns that Gansey, who attends the nearby private school Aglionby, is a wealthy kid. Blue has a rule not to associate with Aglionby lads. Called Raven Boys, their presence can only portend disaster.

But for reasons Blue isn't quite sure of, she finds herself pulled to Gansey. He has it all—financial support from his family, attractive appearance, and loyal friends—but he still wants much more. He is accompanied on his search by three other Raven Boys: Ronan, a fiery spirit who fluctuates between fury and sorrow; Noah, the reserved observer of the four who takes in a lot but says very little; and Adam, the scholarship student who feels cheated out of everything around him.

Blue has been warned for as long as she can remember that she would bring her true love's death. She never imagined that this would be an issue. She's not so sure anymore, however, as her life becomes entangled in the weird and evil world of the Raven Boys.
