Five-year period. That is the amount of time Coyote and her father Rodeo have spent traveling the country on an old school bus. It also represents how long ago Coyote's mother and two sisters perished in an automobile accident.

Even though Coyote hasn't been home in a long time, she comes up with a clever plan to get her father to drive 3,600 miles back to Washington state in four days—without him knowing it—after learning that the park in her old neighborhood, where she, her mom, and her sisters buried a priceless memory box, is going to be demolished.

They will meet up with an odd group of outcast travelers along the route. Lester is eager to meet a woman. Salvador wants to start afresh with his mother. Val requires a secure space to be who she is. And there is Gladys after that.

Coyote will discover over thousands of miles that returning home can occasionally be the most difficult journey of all, but with friends by her side, she just might be able to transform her "once upon a time" into a "happily ever after."
