Renowned psychiatrist Julius Hertzfeld is forced to reevaluate his life and profession following a regular examination, which makes him face his own death. He seeks out Philip Slate, a sex addict whom he failed to heal some twenty years before. However, Philip asserts that he has been cured—miraculously changed by the gloomy teachings of German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer—and that he is now a budding philosopher counselor. Julius is forced by Philip's gloomy, misanthropic demeanor to extend an invitation to Philip to join his rigorous treatment group in return for Schopenhauer teaching. But with just a few months remaining, life could be too short to assist Philip or to challenge him for the group members' affections and thoughts. However, it could just be the right amount of time.
