The Shadow of the Wind

1945 Barcelona: As the city gradually recovers from its battle scars, Daniel, the son of an old book merchant who is grieving the death of his mother, takes comfort in a mystery book written by a man named Julian Carax called The Shadow of the Wind. However, he discovers something startling when he searches for the author's other works: Carax has been methodically deleting all copies of his books. Indeed, Daniel could be in possession of the last copies of Carax's volumes. Daniel's ostensibly benign search soon leads to the discovery of one of Barcelona's most sinister secrets—an epic tale of murder, insanity, and doomed love.
