In the spring of 1942, Elzbieta Rabinek, a young woman, notices the conflict that is escalating rapidly outside her cozy Warsaw home. Although she doesn't like the Germans who enforce curfews and monitor her neighborhoods, she has never really thought about what goes on behind the walls that house her Jewish neighbors. She is forced to hide her true identity since she is all too familiar with the violence committed by the German people. However, Elzbieta discovers something that sends her hurtling into a perilous world of deceit and bravery after becoming friends with Sara, a nurse who lives on the same floor as her.

Elzbieta encounters the truth of the conflict within the ghetto as she uses Sara's connections to smuggle children out of it. She also learns about the predicament of the Gorka family, who must make the difficult choice to give up their newborn daughter or watch her starve. Roman Gorka is so incensed by this last injustice that not even his newly discovered love for Elzbieta can contain his fervor for rebellion. However, his carelessness draws unwelcome attention to Sara's cause and inadvertently puts Elzbieta and her family in danger, up until the point where a violent act threatens to permanently ruin their chance at freedom.

The Warsaw Orphan is the gripping account of Elzbieta and Roman's dangerous quest to recover the love and life they once knew, set against a backdrop of Nazi occupation and the potential for a communist takeover.
