The social contract is eroding at the same pace that environmental stability is due to the rapid changes in times and species. A natural tragedy that will change Earth as we know it has long been foreseen by Adam One, the gentle head of the God's Gardeners, a religion committed to the preservation of all plant and animal life as well as the blending of science and faith. It has now happened, wiping off the majority of human life. Two women have made it out alive: Toby, a God's Gardener trapped within an opulent spa where many of the treatments are edible, and Ren, a teenage trapeze artist imprisoned inside the upscale sex club Scales and Tails.

Do others still survive? Amanda, Ren's pal the bioartist? Her eco-advocate stepfather, Zeb? Jimmy, her one-time partner? Or the homicidal Painballers, who made it out of the mutually exterminating Painball jail? Not to add the covert, dishonest law enforcement apparatus of the governing classes...

Gene-spliced organisms, such as pigs with human brain tissue, Mo'hair sheep with human hair, and lion/lamb hybrids, are multiplying in the meanwhile. Ren and Toby will have to make a decision as they navigate this weird new world with Adam One and his adventurous band dressed in hemp. They are unable to be confined...

Atwood is at her most clever and innovative in The Year of the Flood, which is by turns dark, poignant, violent, contemplative, and uncomfortably amusing.
