1941 in Poland. Roza and her five-year-old daughter Shira hide in a farmer's barn day and night when the Jews in their town are taken up. Shira composes melodies in her thoughts, but only the yellow bird from her mother's stories can sing them because she is forbidden from making any noise.
To take care of Shira and protect her from the horrors of the outer world, Roza goes above and beyond. They create their own sign language and engage in silent activities. However, the day arrives when their safe haven is no longer protected, forcing Roza to make the difficult decision of whether to let her daughter leave and offer her the best chance of survival or to keep her by her side.
The Yellow Bird Sings is a very compelling and poignant book about the strength of the human spirit and optimism in the most hopeless situations, as well as the unshakable bond between a father and kid.
