We Are Not Like Them

This book, which is told from several points of view, centers on two women—one Black and the other White—whose friendship is irrevocably changed by a sad incident.

Since kindergarten, Jen and Riley have been great friends. Even though their paths in life have diverged, they are still as close as sisters as adults. Jen got married young and is now finally pregnant after years of trying. Riley is on the verge of becoming one of the first Black female anchors of the leading news station in their hometown of Philadelphia, having followed her childhood dream of becoming a television journalist.

However, when Jen's husband—a municipal police officer—participates in the shooting of an unarmed Black adolescent, their close relationship is put to the ultimate test. Six months along with her husband's release, Jen's friendship with Riley, and her own future are all up in the air. Riley struggles with the effects of this sad tragedy on her Black neighborhood, her aspirations, and her friendship with her longest friend as she covers this story that might launch her career.
