Ari Abrams has always found the weather to be fascinating, and she loves almost every aspect of her work as a TV meteorologist. Torrance Hale, the renowned weatherwoman from Seattle, is too preoccupied with her turbulent marriage to her former husband, the news director of the station, to provide Ari with the kind of guidance she desires. Ari, who thrives on positivity and brightness, is nearing her breaking point. Russell Barringer, the kind but quiet sports writer, is the only one who appears to know how she feels.

Following a terrible Christmas party, Russell and Ari decide to work together to resolve the interpersonal problems with their superiors. They begin gently pressuring their employers back together with covert presents and double dates. But when genuine connection develops between Ari and Russell, their well-intentioned intervention backfires.

Working closely with Russell entails letting him see aspects of Ari that she chooses to keep private from everyone else. Can he accept her bright sky and black clouds at the same time?
