A little girl called Minli lives in the Fruitless Mountain valley. She works hard in the fields during the day and spends the evenings listening to her father tell amazing stories about the Jade Dragon and the Old Man of the Moon. His mother, fed up with their miserable existence, chastises him for talking rubbish into Minli's mind. However, Minli is enthralled by these charming tales and sets off on a remarkable quest to track down the Old Man of the Moon in order to inquire about how her family might alter their fate. Along the journey, she meets a diverse group of people and fantastical animals, one of which being a dragon that travels with her.
