Wizard and Glass

After surviving Blaine the Mono's last crash, Roland, Eddie, Susannah, Jake, and Jake's pet bumbler wind up stuck in a superflu virus-ravaged parallel Topeka, Kansas. They hear the atonal squalling of a thinny, a place where the fabric of existence has almost fully torn away, as they travel the empty I-70 toward a far-off glass palace. Roland tells his ka-tet a tale about another thinny he saw when he was only a little lad as they are camping close to the thinny's edge. In the course of one long magical night, Roland takes us to the Mid-World of long ago, to a seaside town called Hambry, where he fell in love with Susan Delgado. There, he fought John Farson, the harrier, and his forces, with a little assistance from a seeing sphere known as Maerlyn's Grapefruit, to start Mid-World's final war.
